Kuerdas Band Beginnings- A Recollection

For every journey, there is always a beginning.

For Kuerdas Band, it all began with a song.

Hiling ng Bayan Ko was an original composition which was their entry to a song writing competition.

Kuerdas Band had always been known to be competitive. They started out to compete as neophytes. They joined song writing competitions and band competitions. It was never new to them.

And so was losing. They lost out in the Kadsangal Songwriting Competition 11 years ago. They emerged only fourth place. But it was only the beginning for them.

Kuerdas Band was formed from then on and the rest is history.

Bagong Umaga: A Tribute Song for the Yolanda/ Haiyan Victims by Kuerdas feat. Various Musicians of GenSan

Bagong Umaga is one of the most sterling compositions by Jay Son Ugbaniel a.k.a Onyok, the Kuerdas Band major. Driven by deep sympathy and unbearable grief for the Yolanda typhoon victims, Jay Son and Dexter Morimonte, Kuerdas Band’s percussionist, were both inspired to come up with this meaningful masterpiece.

As the Filipinos felt the onslaught of the strongest typhoon that hit the Earth and while the world sympathized with the typhoon-stricken country, Kuerdas Band and the various musicians in Gensan came together to show its support and sympathy to our fellow Filipinos who were grievously affected by the calamity that ravaged the country and its helpless populace.

Dexter created the chord progression. Jay Son on the other hand put together the lyrics and the melody of the song. Both of them arranged the music.

However, they do NOT take all credit for themselves. The making of Bagong Umaga is a collaborative effort of ALL MUSICIANS IN GENSAN who took part and performed in the spirit of solidarity in this time of distress. They endeavor to somehow give comfort and uplift the Filipino spirits through their kind of music. It is an inspirational song that aims to boost the morale of the Filipinos amidst the tragedy that struck the Philippines. The message that is conveyed in every lyrics of the song is hope- that after the fall must come the rise.

The making of Bagong Umaga is not a walk in the park. It is very commendable and truly praiseworthy that despite each musician’s varied schedules, they took the time and the effort to come up with this beautiful masterpiece as a simple dedication to our fellow Filipinos who have lost many lives and properties.

Please take note that the recording was not done professionally; it was done only in a home studio. Nevertheless, as a General myself, I felt proud that they were able to pull it through; not to mention that the composer himself is my very own brother and one of the artists who sang is our youngest brother, Mark a.k.a Utog, Kuerdas Band’s lead vocals :-)

It is moving to know that these musicians were able to collaborate for the love of their fellow Filipinos.

Bagong Umaga would not have been possible if not for the following musicians who actively participated in this joint undertaking:

KUERDAS feat. Various Musicians of GENSAN
Jomic of 3RD EDGE
Jaja and Ondo of CHIMES and RHYTHM
April of MAYANA
Don-Don, Moner and Gifford Sumaylo of RED OCTOBER

Belated Happy Birthday, Dexter!

October is Dexter’s month. He is Kuerdas Band’s original member and he is the one manning the percussions. Kuerdas Band won’t be Kuerdas without him as he formed part of what the Band was when it started and what the band had accomplished over the years.

As he celebrated his birthday, the band wished him all the best.

May God grant all your heart’s desires and may you have a good one, Dexter!

Kuerdas at Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City

The Kuerdas Band Major and the Kuerdas male lead vocals spent the New Year at Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City with their family. It may be unknown to many but the two are siblings. They may not look alike (LOL!) but yes, the same blood runs through their veins.

It was a New Year well spent at the hotel. The two were able to relax for two nights and three days.

From their family to yours, Kuerdas Band is wishing you a Happy New Year!

Floor Director for INC’s Exaltations Through Voices and Music

The expertise of the Band Major was once again tapped not as a composer this time around but as a Floor Director of the Church in the Iglesia ni Cristo’s EVM (Exaltations Through Voices and Music) Season 3. He had been part of the previous seasons and the Church Administration had always believed in his capability in directing the event’s proceedings.

Have a glimpse of the event by viewing the video below:

I feel proud that he shares his God-given gifts not only to entertain music lovers but to glorify our Lord God as well.

When Nothing But The Best Will Do

After having completed our grocery shopping, my neighbor said that she had to stop on the way home to fetch her eldest son at the Gym. While we drove there she explained somewhat excitedly that he was training hard to become the new Wrestling Champion at his University.

It didn’t take us long to reach the Gym and I noticed there were many hunks heaving and grunting as they went through their training routine.

“There he is!”, my neighbor pointed with her index finger and he noticed our presence and came running over to meet us. He looked really swell and I heard him tell his Mom, “If I am to win this year’s Championship, Mom you have to get me wrestling shoes from Suplay.com This pair won’t help me win the Championship”.

She looked at me and stared at the ceiling. I understood what it meant to her but I also knew she would give her son nothing but the best.

When You Hire a Musician

I believe that God given gifts could simply not be underrated. Thus, a talent is not like an item that one can easily haggle. It holds true for some musicians who has been exploited.

Yes folks!

It’s a sad fact that indeed, there are some musicians who allow themselves to be exploited just for the sake of exposure.

So what does actually one pays for when they hire musicians?

So don’t hesitate to pay what you ought to pay because certainly, you’ll get more than actually what you’re paying for!
